Well, as planned, I was able to put this together the following day (congratulations to me). You all know what this is about and I can just tell you have been anxiously awaiting this moment, so let’s get the party started, shall we?
Queen & David Bowie’s Under Pressure
I am one of those guys who loves Queen. In all honesty, they are a great band with one of the best lead singers I have ever heard. Freddie Mercury had one of the best voices I have ever heard on a singer. It’s probably my favorite voice. This song was the first collaboration Queen did with another artist and it was probably one of the best rock collaborations that I’ve heard. Although I’m not a huge fan of Bowie, I really like his part in this song, even if it does pale in comparison to Mercury’s vocals. The absolute best part of this song is when it builds up to Mercury belting out, “Can’t we give ourselves one more chance, Why can’t we give love that one more chance.” If you do enjoy this song, I encourage you to listen to more Queen. In my opinion, they were truly a special group and they are definitely one of my favorite bands to listen to. And no, this song isn’t Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby and they definitely did not sample it from him as this song came out at least a decade before Vanilla Ice “borrowed” the beat. The clip here is from a concert and is a live version sans Bowie. I chose this version because it shows how excellent Mercury’s vocals were and how great the song sounded, even live. If you want to skip directly the song, go about 2:15 into the video and that should do the trick.
Oasis’ Mucky Fingers
I know, I know. I finally included an Oasis song. To those of you who know me, this is of course no surprise to you. I love Oasis. And, although I could listen to all their songs for the rest of my life, this one really gets to me. There is nothing that special about the lyrics (although I do think they are quite witty); instead, I find that it’s the actual music in this that really gives me chills. My favorite lyrics in the song have to be, “You found your God in a paperback, You get your history from the Union Jack, And all your brothers and sisters have gone, And they won’t come back.” But if you are going to listen to any part of the song, you have to listen to the solo part of the song. In hear you will find an harmonica solo that will absolutely make your spine tingle. It’s probably one of the best harmonica solos I’ve ever heard. Also, you will not hear the usual Liam on vocals for Oasis in this song; instead, his brother, the lead guitarist, Noel, delivers the pipes in fine fashion.Click here for video. The Redwalls’ Summer Romance
The Redwalls are probably one of those bands you have heard before and never even realized it. A while back, AT&T rolled commercials that played a song with lyrics, “Build a bridge and bring both sides together.” This is the Redwalls. Recently, they released a new album (last year sometime) and this album is by far their best. This track, Summer Romance, is epic. It’s got this building up sound to it, leading up to the release in the chorus. The bridge just seems very fast, with the lyrics, “Hopeless bounds of discontent, With wild thoughts without regret, The promises that don’t get kept, The fall in love, The monuments.” This is followed by the plea, “Please, Don’t let me hear you say goodbye,” that’s sang in such a way, you believe the lead singer is in a lot of pain. This song is fantastically great and if you like it, check out more of their other stuff. They are a really great band that just hasn’t found it’s audience yet.Sorry, couldn’t find a great video clip. But the song stands on it’s own.
The Hives’ Diabolic Scheme
As you have surely seen if you visit my site, I am a fan of The Hives. So much so, that I went and watched them live in Nashville with Ashley. Most people may not like this song, as it has one odd, unique sound. The lead singer is nicknamed Howlin’ Pelle for a reason. He constantly howls throughout the song in an while an eerie guitar riff plays in the background. When the song culminates in the guitar solo, you are treated to a guitar that sounds horribly out of tune, yet mysteriously rhythmic. There’s quite a lot of energy in the song and that alone gives me goosebumps, but the solo puts me over the top. My favorite lyrics are, “You searched the globe for them perfect looks, And you searched for answers in all your books, And finally by diabolic ascent here I am.” I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do.And if you are brave enough, the live video:
Ok Go’s Oh Lately It’s So Quiet
Most of you will recognize this band as “that band that dances on treadmills.” While that song is good, this song is great. This is another song that almost seems to haunt me when I listen to it. It’s just a great sound by a band who has music that’s catchy and addictive. I first heard this band on Leno or one of the late night shows and they have stayed close to my playlist ever since. The lyrics in this song that really make me shiver are, “Whose house, are you haunting tonight? Aw, Whose sheets you twist, Aw, Whose face you kiss, Whose house, are you haunting tonight?” It’s hard to put my finger on what really makes this song give me goosebumps, but I’d say it’s the mixture of great, longing lyrics with unfamiliar sound that grows on you. For your viewing pleasure, I will include a link to this song live. But by all means, listen to the studio version on the album down below as well.
Well, this concludes my list. I hope you all have enjoyed traveling down this road as much as I have. Please leave any comments or questions that you may have in the comments. Agree? Disagree? Let me know.
