Parent Quality

I usually try to reserve judgement on things unless I’ve had that experience before. As you know, I’ve never been a parent, so when I see people parenting, I usually try to reserve judgement on them as I have never been in that situation before. Friday night, in the midst of working on my previously mentioned programming project, I decided to go get a drink at the local Liquor Barn as things were going well and I wanted to relax a bit while working on it.

So I head to the Barn, but on the way there I am suck behind this Ford SUV. As I’m behind it at a stop light, I hear ridiculously loud rap music pouring out of it’s windows. I mean, so loud that I can clearly hear the song, word for word, in my car with the windows rolled up. It turns out that they are heading to the Barn as well. I pull up beside them in the parking lot and am getting out when I noticed it’s a woman in her late twenties driving the SUV, with her music just as loud as before, sitting there with her windows down. I head inside and as I’m walking down the aisles, trying to figure out what I wanted for the evening, I see the SUV woman, walking with her very young son, who had to be four – six years of age. He was walking around playing his Sony PSP, with his mom instructing him not to touch anything on the shelves as she was about five steps ahead of him and only looking back every so often. After I check out and am walking back to my car, I see the same woman putting her son into her SUV. When I get into my car I once again hear her extremely loud music, echoing throughout the parking lot.

I don’t really know what kind of parent this woman is, but to me, this just seems pretty terrible. I mean, first of all, you are driving around with your son listening to music that is way too loud. I mean, if someone behind you in traffic can hear your music, word for word, clearly, with their windows rolled up, that’s too loud. I promise, good music is still good at a reasonable volume level. Then I see you walk your son down a liquor store aisle. That would be alright, if you were actually walking with your kid and not walking five steps ahead and barely looking back to check every so often. I mean, when I was young, my grandfather would take me into bars. So my judgement on a kid in a liquor store might be a bit skewed. At least she didn’t leave her son in the car though while she went in, so she at least did that correctly. Where do you all stand on this? Like it matters though, since only one of you will leave a comment and if I’m lucky, the rest of the comments will be more great spam.

  1. Why were they in a barn in the first place? There are civilized stores now a days….

  2. Isn’t this why they invented drive up windows? That way everyone in the store could have enjoyed the music. At least it wasn’t country!

  3. I’d much prefer country music to the music she was listening too. And yes, a drive through liquor store would have been a better solution to her needs. Also, they are good for the drunk on the go who likes to drink while driving. ;)
