The Bumpy Road to ‘Me’

As some of you know (but probably not many) Apple is changing their “.Mac” service to “MobileMe” (yes I know, the name isn’t all that great). I’ve recently subscribed to .Mac to try this service out (subscribed before the transition so I could get the old price of .Mac on Amazon which was $20 cheaper than the normal price). I’ve already set up .Mac previous to today, but this morning I got quite a surprise. In my Software Update I had a download for the MobileMe transition. I downloaded it and installed it. The first thing I noticed was this:

This is the setting in my System Preferences to change the settings for MobileMe. After clicking on it, I get a message saying that it cannot connect to the server. I decide maybe I should log out and then log back in. After doing that, I receive this nice message:

I know that my login information is correct, but at this point I kind of start worrying, “What if I can’t get to my school work that I have stored on my iDisk?” (iDisk is online storage offered by the .Mac service). So I restart my computer and attempt to access my iDisk. When looking at the desktop, I notice something new right away:

So this excites me some. I’m still able to access my iDisk. Then I look to see if all my data is still be synced through the service through the icon in my menubar, only to discover that it is indeed not syncing for the time being:

So far I’m not too worried about it though. They are still updating the service for everyone and I think it’s only a matter of time before they get all the bugs hammered out.

Unfortunately though, I noticed a little issue on my Macbook Pro about an hour ago: the MobileMe update does not show up in the Software Update yet. Hopefully this is a temporary thing and it will show up, but if all else fails, there are people with the installer package that I can always download (but that prospect makes me a little uneasy since I’d just be downloading it from some random guy probably). Oh well, guess you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

Update: Well, over the course of the night, I was able to actually sync all my data and access my iDisk; However, I’m still not able to access the web front-end and Apple has acknowledged this now. Keeping the fingers crossed that, soon, I will see that beautiful new web interface.

Update: It’s finally happened. I am now able to access the web front-end for MobileMe. It’s quite nice and I’m looking forward to experimenting with it more over the next few days.
