Sitting In Silence On My Own

Right now, I’m sitting in my girlfriend’s living room in her apartment. Buckley is hanging out with me and the tube is dialed in on Home Improvement. Finishing up coffee, surfing the net, and really just trying to decide what to do with the rest of the day. I have had some time to work on a few websites I am building, but haven’t really dedicated that time to actually doing any work (much to my dismay). Instead, I have downloaded a blogging desktop client. The software in question is MarsEdit, which is developed by Red Sweater Software. I know what you’re thinking, “You can write posts via WordPress.” And you would be correct. But with MarsEdit, you get at least one thing (that I’m aware of, but I have only started to look at it now) that the online interface of WordPress does not currently provide: Flickr integration.

Basically, MarsEdit offers a handy interface to access your Flickr account and quickly bring in pictures from your Flickr to your blog post. As far as I know, there is no easy quick way to do this using the online WordPress interface. While this seems like a small reason to try a program that costs about $30, it could make posting a little easier. In my first iteration of my site, I had a really convoluted way of making posts to my site and found it hard to keep everything together on it. I found it almost a pain to create posts. Now, with the WordPress interface, that experience has improved, but it’s not exactly the most seamless way of posting. I’m hoping that MarsEdit may provide that seamless experience that triggers me to post more frequently (how old is that going to get, me talking about posting more frequently, but never coming through).

So I write you this post from MarsEdit which I am enjoying at the moment. I have a 30 day trial, so I’m hoping to use it quite often over the next 30 days and really see if it’ll be that product that I’m seeking. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to enable MarsEdit to actually connect to my Flickr account now.

  1. Couldnt you just use the built in RSS on flickr. Upload pictures, tag them with a specific tag, plop in the RSS feed, theres your pictures?

  2. But does the RSS feed allow you to pick and choose your pictures, easily, with a GUI? That is the question my friend. haha Seriously though, I was not aware of RSS feeds in Flickr. Will have to check that out.

  3. Naw, last time I checked RSS didn’t include GUI’s…. j/k

You should be fine with your elite command line skills.

Any tag, grouping, organization that flickr gives you is available in an RSS feed. It’ll be at the bottom of the page. So if I log in and go to my tags section and I see pictures that are tagged “dog,” there will be a RSS link at the bottom of that page. So I was thinking just tag it according to the post that you are doing. I dunno. You do realize your going to want that flickr pro account dont you. hahah. Join the dark side. You get stats Todd, stats.

  4. Yeah yeah. Actually, the last time I logged into Flickr, I was told that I’m about to hit my 200 picture limit. They were encouraging me to get the pro account as well. I guess I could, so I could get that “pro” tag with my name, to show that I’m l33t. haha

  5. You should. Its all the rage. Plus, you can start using it as picture backup. One less thing to worry about. You can create it to where only YOU can see the picture, not even family and friends (im sure you already know that) so its decent archive.

  6. I’m very new to blogging and just set up my website this week. I’m testing MarsEdit and was intrigued by the connection to Flickr so I could add pictures.

I had difficulty getting anything from Flickr to show up in the MarsEdit browser even though everything was configured correctly. Is it true that it will only show my album of pictures that I’ve uploaded to Flickr in the first place?

If I had pictures, why would I need to go to Flickr? I want other people’s pictures! What am I missing?

Thanks! BTW: I love the way your website looks. Very clean.

  7. The idea of the MarsEdit and Flickr integration is that you would have the ability to share your pictures. Most people use Flickr as a way to host their own images and also see other people’s images. The MarsEdit integration is meant as a way for your to share a picture on your website from your Flickr account. This saves you on hosting costs as Flickr will host the image and you are just linking to it. If you are wanting to link to another person’s image on Flickr, Flickr does offer the ability to obtain a link to that image so that you could post it on your website.

I hope this clears it up a bit. Thanks for the compliment and congrats on your new site.
