If you don’t know who Favre is or why I would be talking about him going to New York, then you are completely out of the loop. I say this and at the time I’ve never meant it more: Unfortunately, I am a Jets fan. Why it is unfortunate? No, it’s not because I have some vendetta against Brett Favre (if you are a football fan, it’s impossible to hate or dislike the guy) or that I think he won’t be good when he plays for the Jets. No, it’s because of how they treat their players.
I understand that the NFL is a business. Players are traded and sold as though they are pieces of property in a huge, dirty game of Monopoly. However, it still doesn’t excuse them when they treat one of their players like shit. In this deal that sends Favre to the Jets, the Jets will either trade or outright dismiss Chad Pennington from their team.
I am a Chad Pennington fan. I admit that he doesn’t have the greatest arm and he may not be the greatest athlete on the field. However, he has something that does give him an edge on the field: intelligence. He is a very intelligent quarterback who would give everything while on the field, instead of Favre who will still give you everything when he is on the field, but he will instead make dumb mistakes at times.
In all of this, I can understand why the Jets would make this deal. Favre is a great quarterback. What I can’t understand though, is how they treated one of the classiest players that they’ve ever had in their organization. After all, all Pennington did for the Jets was give his body and soul to the team. And in the middle of all the “Favre coming to New York” speculation and “Kellen Clemens should be the starter” discussion, Pennington acted like a true professional and said the right things, that he wasn’t worried about it because all he could control was how he played in between those white lines. Unfortunately for Pennington, playing well between those white lines during this training camp meant nothing.
In other news though, as much as I like and respect Favre, I can’t get over ESPN’s love affair with him. Honestly, they may as well call it FPN for Favre Programming Network. The last two weeks have been “Today in Brett Favre News.” Whether it’s Sportscenter, Around the Horn, or Pardon the Interruption, there is nonstop Favre action. So much so that their coverage actually comes off a little biased against the Green Bay Packers. Sure, the Packers aren’t exactly good guys in this scenario (pretty much black balling Favre and guilty of being total dicks throughout the process), but this seems to be a little harsh:
Yeah, incase you don’t see it, the typo clearly calls “Green Bay” “Green Gay.” And yes, it’s hilarious to me.
