As you tennis fans will know, the US Open has been going on for the past week and I have been glued to the television. I love the Grand Slam events and since the US Open actually has matches that happen at a reasonable time (instead of three in the morning like the other events halfway across the world), I love watching it.
Unfortunately, there are commercial breaks. On top of that, you’ll see the same damn commercials over and over again. Which is fine for the most part, except when companies make exceptionally irritating commercials that just drive you bat-shit crazy when you see them. My example: the newest Wendy’s commercial that involves the ‘Baconator’. Yes, if you are unfamiliar with it, there is a burger named the ‘Baconator’. It consists of bread, some condiment sauce (looks like mayo or something) two slabs of beef, two pieces of cheese, and a layer of bacon. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not one of those people that hates and criticizes the fast food industry, because lets face it, they are not doing anything wrong. They are offering a product (and at times, a mighty delicious, guilty pleasure product) that people are willing to consume way too often. I don’t blame them for it. They are taking advantage of the demand and that’s fine. No, I’m extremely pissed at the advertisement. For those of you lucky enough to have missed it, I will fill you in. Basically, there is this girl and guy enjoying a lunch at Wendy’s. She offers him a bit of her salad and he declines. No, apparently he’s a ‘meatatarian’. He only eats meat (which is already a lie because there happens to be bread involved in his sandwich). Finally he gives some bullshit line about how you have to commit to this.
If all he eats is meat and by the sound of it, it seems like all he eats is Wendy’s ‘baconator’ sandwiches. If this is the case, his meatatarian lifestyle seems to be on the fast track to heart disease. Seriously. If he keeps this up, he’s going to be dead before the end of year, maybe even the end of the US Open. This entire commercial just drives me nuts. I don’t blame fast food companies for supplying food that may or may not be good (nutritionally-wise), but I do blame them for promoting and advertising crap like this. Just show the damn burger. Alright? If you just show the burger, it’ll be fine. I promise. You’re advertising a freaking burger. It seems like this commercial is starting to cross that fine line and actually advertise and promote unhealthy lifestyles. Good job Wendy’s.
