The Vesper

So as a male, it's pretty much accepted that we are going to be entertained for that James Bond lifestyle. We want the glory, we want the women, we want to be that sophisticated hero. The sophisticated drink that James prefers is of course a martini. In Casino Royale, Bond orders a gin-based martini that he creates right on the spot, which he later names the Vesper. I've never had a martini before, and as I like to try new drinks, I thought I'd give it a whirl this past Friday night.
I've always considered martinis kind of girly as a drink. I don't know why, I suppose it's just that it's a mixed drink in that funky glass, but I've always thought of it as more of a girl's drink. The first stop for this experience is LiquorBarn. After buying some Grey Goose vodka, Gordon's dry gin, Stock sweet vermouth, martini glass, mixer, and lemons, I'm ready to mix everything together.
The recipe I used for making the Vesper called for:
3 parts gin
1 part vodka
1/2 part vermouth
lemon wedge
I didn't really have a good way of measuring it, so I made each part a shot. This was probably the downfall of the experiment. So basically I had, in my glass, 3 shots of gin, 1 shot of vodka, and half a shot of vermouth, with a lemon wedge.
After the first drink, I gasped for air. This is probably the strongest drink I've ever had. The gin is quite overbearing and I was constantly doing the "Keystone bitter beer face" as I was drinking it. Thirty minutes later, I finally finish the drink and I'm quite buzzed. If Bond can pound these back whilst playing cards, shoot the bad guy, then save the world, he is certainly more of a man than I am. I have to give it to Bond, the Vesper is probably the manliest drink I've ever had. I think from now on I'll stick to beer, Makers Mark, or Johnny Walker for when I want a drink.
