Evolution in Dreams
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11:36PM
Everyone has them: dreams. From the time you are young you are either having them while you are asleep or you are planning what you'd like to do with your life. It's funny how the course of life causes these dreams and aspirations to change and evolve. I can remember being in Kindergarten during one of those "dress up as what you want to be" days. Of course the most popular careers were that of being a hero; no, not those comic book heroes that usually come to mind, but rather real heroes such as firefighters and policemen. I, on the other hand, had bigger plans. No, I did not plan on being a computer science major. Instead, I wanted to be a race car driver. That's right. My life's ambition during Kindergarten was to grow up and drive a car in circles, all the while trying to beat all the other competitors. I dreamed of being in my own version of Days of Thunder.
Unfortunately, I gave up on those dreams to pursue various other careers throughout my lifetime. The most prevalent would be some career that would keep me in sports. I only had one big setback to being a sports star however: I suck at sports. That's right, I know it's hard to believe. You'd think, "Man, Todd must be great at sports. He exercises so much." But it's true, I'm just not as athletically inclined as my peers were.
This prompted me to search for a more probable career. Eventually, towards my senior year in high school, I finally settled on a computer engineering and computer science major. Looking back on this decision, I just find it interesting to see the transformation process of childhood dreams into adulthood goals. Instead of dreaming about racing in the Daytona 500, I am now dreaming about landing a job at Google or Apple. Oh what a difference thirteen years makes.
Looking back, I'm not disappointed that I didn't blindly chase my childhood dreams or achieve them, but I'm curious as to whether others have given up those dreams and what those dreams were. I just find it interesting on how much changes while we grow up. Did you settle? Or did you land that career you have been dreaming about since childhood?
