Welcome Drobo
Monday, September 8, 2008 at 02:18PM
I finally broke down and purchased the ultimate backup/additional storage solution: Drobo. For those of you who don't know, the Drobo is a Data Robot. It's actually a very sophisticated, very cool piece of hardware. Not only does it take up to four hard drives of any size and combine them into a storage pool, but it also stripes that data across all the drives inserted into the machine and keeps that data redundant also, so that the data on there is safe. Safe as in, if one hard drive fails, all you have to do is pop it out and put in a new hard drive, give it time to rebuild itself and all your data will be there. Pretty cool huh? Still don't understand it? Well, get the gist of it here:
Right now, I have mine in the process of getting setup (i.e. putting my Time Machine backups on there from my old backup drive). This process is taking quite awhile. It's been almost two hours now and I still have quite a bit of time to go as I've transferred roughly 100 GB of data (out of the 430 GB of data to transfer). Definitely time consuming. Hopefully by the time I go to bed tonight, my new Time Machine drive will be up and running. Wish me luck!
